OCTOBER VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

The Halcombe Community Development Group nominated Vicki Powell as the New Zealand Couriers Volunteer of the Month.  After reviewing the amazing work Vicki has done the Keep NZ Beautiful team whole heartedly agree that Vicki is an incredible woman and very deserving of winning the VOM award for October.

Over the past 3 years the village of Halcombe in the Manawatu, have been fundraising and have received funds from the Manawatu District Council to turn an unused derelict piece of land beside the railway into a walkway for the whole village to enjoy. The village of Halcombe got in behind the project to raise the appearance of the village and return a sense of pride in those living here. Vicki Powell has taken this project to heart. She has green fingers so has been growing native shrubs to plant along the Walkway. The challenges that she has faced is that the walkway, being along reclaimed derelict railway land, the weeds are prolific and our native trees are not keen on living there. Vicki can be found most days spraying the weeds, checking on the status of the donated trees and picking up any rubbish. Vicki reports on the status of the walkway at each monthly Halcombe Community Development Group meeting, she brings to our attention things that she is unable to sort out herself and the HCDG now provides Vicki with the spray and equipment that she needs to do the job as she was buying the spray out of her own pocket.

Vicki also turned her attention to the Halcombe Memorial Hall and the state of the land around it. The HCDG organised a Working Bee to put in a low herb garden and weed spraying under Vicki’s guidance. Vicki also grew all the herbs that were planted. Vicki inspires the whole village to look after where they live by picking up rubbish and looking after their own property. The Walkway is something that the whole community are all proud of and is used by the whole village. On the recent Keep NZ Beautiful Clean Up Week campaign, Vicki donned her gumboots and waded down the small stream pulling out car parts and a vacuum cleaner.
