Newlands Intermediate unveil mural celebrating Wellington’s iconic sculptures

Newlands Intermediate, winners of the Keep New Zealand Beautiful (KNZB) Wall Worthy Competition, were excited to unveil their completed mural this month.

In its 7th year, the Wall Worthy competition celebrates our communities, local legends and unheard stories in a way that will visually improve the environment.  KNZB asked schools to submit what makes their town or school unique and illustrate how they would tell their story through a painted mural.

Rachael Gaston, Art Teacher at Newlands Intermediate School, said “We have had such a tremendous time creating our masterpiece. The design was an exceptionally intricate and detailed ‘Where’s Wally’, based on our local environment. It portrayed our school symbols, iconic sculptures and well known locations, the Wellington Taniwha Whātaitai, as well as Papatūānuku and Ranginui, from the beloved Māori creation myth.

It was a joy working with my fantastic group of year sevens. Their talent and dedication brought our collaborative vision into fruition. I am so thankful for all their patience, hard work, and the fabulous memories formed throughout this true labour of love.”

KNZB CEO, Heather Saunderson, says Wall Worthy is a nationwide behavioural change campaign aimed at the elimination and prevention of graffiti vandalism from a community based approach.  “There tends to be a reduction in tagging when urban murals, reflective of the local community, are used to replace graffiti vandalised walls” says Saunderson.

Newlands Intermediate’s prize included $750.00 of Resene paint and accessory vouchers, a drop cloth, t-shirts, caps, high vis vests, badges, and a camera on completion of the mural.

Winners of the Wall Worthy 2017 competition were Coromandel Community Preschool, Sacred Heart School, Newlands Intermediate School and Little Adventurers’ Early Learning Centre (artwork by students of Mana High School).

Wall Worthy is proudly sponsored by Resene.
