Become a volunteer

Volunteering with us is a fun and satisfying way to get involved in your community.

Become a volunteer and you’ll be part of a network of incredible Kiwis all over the country, working together to do their bit for a cleaner, safer environment.

Whether you’re an individual or a family, a business or not-for-profit, whether you have a lot of time or a little, there’s a heap you can do to help Keep New Zealand Beautiful.

Join a branch

We have Community Branches across the country are always interested in getting help from new volunteers. A Community Branch is a group of people who are passionate about keeping New Zealand clean and green for the next generation of Tidy Kiwis. Joining as a volunteer is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and try something new, while at the same time making a difference to the environment. If you’re interested in leading the charge and starting a new branch please email info@knzb.org.nz.

Nominate a Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month

Do you have someone in your community who is deserving of our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month Award? If you do, all you need to do is fill in our nomination form.

Each month our Tidy Kiwi winner will receive a $100 donation, some of our cool retro gear, a Resene paint voucher and lots more – along with being automatically entered into the annual Beautiful Awards. Plus, thanks to Stand Desk we have four desks to give away this year.  We’ll draw a Tidy Kiwi winner every three months and the lucky person will receive a standing desk. How awesome is that?

Volunteer to organise an event

If you want to organise an event outside of our annual programming, that’s no problem. We have community clean up kits, and thanks to our sponsor Resene graffiti paint out kits which we can send to you.

All of our resources are completely free for community groups but are subject to availability and you’ll need to complete an evaluation form after your event. We also provide kits for corporates, but ask for a minimum contribution of $250 (ex GST) to cover costs.

Become a citizen scientist

In 2019 we carried out a National Litter Audit which compiled data through the physical inspection and visual counting of litter in a number of specific, fixed sites. The data from this audit provides baseline data on litter across New Zealand to help inform national and regional policy development. It also forms the basis for ongoing environmental reporting on litter.

Our citizen science programmes, Upstream Battle and Backyard Battle, are a great way for you to get involved, collaborate and contribute to the solution whilst gaining experience in data collection and analysis. The programmes are aimed at schools, community groups, families and volunteers throughout New Zealand. It’s a great opportunity to gain training and experience in citizen science, and the programmes link to a diverse range of learning areas in the New Zealand curriculum and United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The data collected from these programmes will provide a secondary dataset to our National Litter Audit. Together the data will feed into a shared database that will help to inform local and national legislation, our community led programming and behaviour change campaigns.
