12 Jul 2022 Congratulations to Sandra and Alfonso Hehei, winners of our Tidy Kiwi Volunteers of the Month for June. This amazing husband/wife duo have been working tirelessly as the kaitiaki – guardians and conservers – of their community of Mangonui in the Far North. Fonz (as he’s known) and Sandra work hard to make a difference, with their tamariki and mokopuna (grandchildren) in mind. They’re often on clean ups, including on council rubbish collection days, when pests rip open and scatter the contents of bags; educating the community about the need to protect local dotterel nesting areas; and organising working bees to tidy up their urupa (cemetery). The whole whanau also help pick up litter from their scenic beaches, showing that Sandra and Fonz’s kaitiakitanga – guardianship of the environment – is being instilled with the next generation too. Whakamihi, congratulations! As this month’s Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month, Sandra and Fonz will receive a Keep New Zealand Beautiful merchandise pack and a Resene paint voucher – along with being automatically nominated for the Tidy Kiwi Award at our next Beautiful Awards!
