2 Sep 2021 Congratulations to Helen Howard, the winner of our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month for August. Helen started picking up litter on the beach every week while her sons scootered and biked at the pump track on Marine Parade in Napier. Disturbed by the amount of litter there was around she started Plog Napier with the help of funding from Napier City Council and support from Keep Napier Beautiful. Plogging is the combination of jogging and picking up litter. “I saw plogging was taking off in Europe and I wanted to encourage others to pick up litter too,” says Helen. The initiative has now been running for two years and through her Facebook page Helen aims to inspire other locals to get involved and give plogging a try. Helen plogs all over Napier and sometimes in Havelock North and Hastings too. She also runs Sustainable Napier, which from September will host monthly Repair Cafes. “I still enjoy picking up litter even though it can be a bit frustrating at times. It’s a never ending job!” Congratulations again Helen and thanks for all the hard work you are doing to Keep New Zealand Beautiful. This month’s Tidy Kiwi will receive $100, a Keep New Zealand Beautiful t-shirt, a Resene paint voucher and more – along with being automatically nominated for the Tidy Kiwi Award at our annual Beautiful Awards! Plus, thanks to Stand Desk we have four desks to give away this year to our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month winners – we will draw a winner for this every three months. If you know someone who does great work keeping New Zealand beautiful, you can nominate them here. Share this page
