CLEAN UP WEEK BIGGEST EVER

Numbers are in, and Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean Up Week 2015 is officially the biggest ever!  Over 43,000 volunteers from schools, businesses, community groups, families and individuals registered to help clean up NZ at over 600 events across the country.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful General Manager, Heather Saunderson said this is a great increase on 2014 and all round was a fantastic result.  “Year on year Clean Up Week is getting bigger and bigger which is great to see.” She says Clean Up Week is a great tool to increase awareness around litter, but it is important that New Zealand adopts the Tidy Kiwi philosophy in day to day life and continues to have an awareness of litter all year round.

This year volunteers reported the discovery of everything from mattresses, TV’s and fishing lines to ghetto blasters, heaters, tires and suit cases.  There were thousands of reports of small pieces of plastic and wrappers on beaches and in parks, which Ms Saunderson says individually people might not think make that bigger difference,  however once you add it altogether we are talking thousands of kilos of rubbish.

Ms Saunderson wanted to thank each and every volunteer, and all of the Clean Up Week sponsors for their time and tremendous efforts.  “New Zealand you should be proud you have really stepped up and done an incredible job.”
