APRIL VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Kaya (5) and Isis (3) are the New Zealand Couriers Volunteer of the Month for April.  Congratulations girls – keep up the great work!!!The girls were nominated by their mum who said they live in Henderson, Auckland. Prior to living in here, they had been renting, so she said the kids felt a real sense of belonging and community now they livied in a home that the family owned.

Every day they walk to school and kindergarten. During these walks, the girls often comment on the rubbish they see and are upset by the lack of care and respect for their environment.  A couple of months ago, there was even more rubbish than usual that they noticed on their morning walk (mostly fast-food packaging) this made Kaya and Isis quite angry and they decided to do something about it.

They came up with the idea of cleaning it up themselves and they have been doing this weekly ever since. Now that they are personally taking responsibility for their street, they feel even more disappointed when the street is littered again the next day but not discouraged. If anything, they are motivated to make a difference. Kaya plans to bring the issue up with her school principal and they are currently brainstorming ideas on what else they can do to clean up their street.
