Congratulations to Daniel Moore, our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month for October.

Daniel Moore is a 12-year-old student with special needs at Aparima School in Riverton. He has a keen interest in rubbish trucks and recycling, so his teachers/teacher aides have created an entire programme for him based around recycling plastics using Keep New Zealand Beautiful ideas and resources. He happily volunteers his time and energy during lunch and lesson times at his school to collect and recycle plastics, to plant trees as part of the school’s Tree Project, and to help ‘recycle’ unwanted vegetables via the school’s Soup Kitchen.

Daniel has developed his writing/drawing skills by making posters to encourage the school community to recycle, and has learned how to use tallies to count and record the number of plastic bottles the school recycles every week. He even got up in the school assembly with two other students to present a notice about the ‘ReMobile’ collection the school has just started. All of this has boosted Daniel’s confidence, his learning, and his social interactions and his school and family are delighted with his progress.

Thanks to Daniel, the school has now been granted a yellow recycling bin – the first school to have one in Southland. WasteNet Southland sponsored Waste Free Wanda to perform at the school and after the show Daniel and his teacher aide Sue spoke to Wanda and a representative from WasteNet and explained how time consuming it was to take the plastics from the school up to the recycling centre on the edge of town every week and politely asked for a yellow bin –  and the yellow bin was granted! Daniel will be in charge of recycling the school’s plastics using the new bin.

Congratulations again Daniel! Thank you for being such a great Tidy Kiwi!
