Congratulations to Aled, our February Volunteer of the Month

Every Sunday 14-year-old Aled from the Waimakariri area grabs his bike and a rubbish bag and travels along from Ashley School to Cones Road. Along the way he collects the trash that is regularly dumped on the side of the road.

Before moving to Canterbury Aled lived on a farm in Marlborough where reforestation schemes, especially of native manuka for the local bee population was a focus.

When he rode from home to see a friend in Ashley Village he noticed heaps of rubbish on the cycle path and road verges.

As a member of the sustainability council at his school, he knew that picking up rubbish in the local area was important – to keep microplastics out of waterways, to keep broken glass off the cycle ways, and hopefully to make the area more beautiful for everyone. Plus, it gets him out and about!

Aled is sad to see the amount of rubbish that gets left behind. He knows that giving half an hour or so a week really does make a difference.

Well done Aled. Thanks for KEEPING NEW ZEALAND BEAUTIFUL
