Congratulations to our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month for September, Alex White!

Congratulations to Alex White, our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month for September. Alex lives on a rural road just out of Hawera in Taranaki and was tired of seeing all the litter that had been thrown out of car windows, so she decided one Sunday to take action and clean it up.

“I went for a walk down the road picking up all the bits of plastic, cans, bottles and much, much more –  even disposable nappies! Every half kilometre or so I had to drop a couple of full bags off to pick up on the way back. I walked 4.5 kilometres of the road, which is about half, and our neighbour down the road is doing the other half. Once the bags were picked up and brought home we sorted them into recyclables and rubbish before disposing of them.”

Sadly the day after Alex’s clean up, more litter had ended up on the road from people travelling through. Alex is hoping to get signs put up along the road to remind people to ‘Do The Right Thing’ and keep rubbish in their car until they can dispose of it responsibly.

Alex plans to head out along her road again in the holidays to clean up more of the litter.

Congratulations again Alex! Thank you for all your hard work to keep your little part of New Zealand beautiful.
