1 Nov 2016The 2016 results are officially in for Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean up week! With a record total of 625 clean up events that took place all over New Zealand involving over 40,000 people. Groups that registered for clean up supplies ranged from whole schools cleaning up huge areas of beaches, to businesses getting out of the office to clean up their local park right through to small family groups cleaning up their street! This year we saw our biggest number to date of 255 schools and ECE’s get on board with clean up week creating the opportunity for our next generation of Tidy Kiwi’s to get involved and help Keep New Zealand Beautiful. Huge thanks and appreciation goes out to each and every person involved no matter how much you picked up or how long you were able to spend cleaning up – every bit of effort put in, goes towards helping to Keep New Zealand Beautiful.Through gathering the information from evaluation forms, we were able to estimate that close to 60 tonnes of rubbish was collected over the week! It was great to additionally record that so many people took the time to recycle what they could and to take the opportunity to educate the participants and be important role models in our communities. Collecting this rubbish from our communities keeps our waterways clear, makes our neighbourhoods cleaner, feel safer and definitely look more beautiful. The opportunity to get together with others to take pride in our public spaces helps everyone appreciate them more and protects the future of these areas for all to enjoy. This is a phenomenal result by communities throughout our beautiful country. Keep New Zealand Beautiful was proud to be able to provide resources to enable so many people to participate in clean up week – but the results are yours, Congratulations! We are grateful to all those people who helped support the week from our sponsors to each site coordinator and every participant. We are particularly grateful to everyone that supported us to be able to provide free disposal of the rubbish during the week – to councils throughout NZ and to Wastemanagement, Envirowaste! Together we have accomplished some amazing results and we hope that it has provided an opportunity for all New Zealanders to consider their behaviour when disposing of their rubbish to ‘Do the Right Thing’.
