“Ruawai Primary is thrilled and honoured to have been chosen as a winner in Keep New Zealand Beautiful’s 2016 ‘Wall Worthy’ competition. We are proud of our design, which reflects our local community, and are excited about being able to present a local legend, ‘The Tale of Five Brothers’, in mural form. Our mural is vibrant and colourful, and includes local landmarks, using colours from our new school logo and also incorporating our school values. We would like to thank Keep New Zealand Beautiful, and their sponsors, Resene Paint, for giving us the opportunity and means to complete this exciting project.”

“Apanui School is thrilled to win the Keeping New Zealand Beautiful’s Wall Worthy competition for our mural design titled –  “He manu hou ahau, he pi ka rere.”   –  “I am a small bird poised for flight.”  The design depicts the four flightless birds that our junior classes are named after – Kiwi, Takahē, Kākāpō and  Korora.  It also depicts a tall Kowhai tree and Apanui school kids climbing in the tree.  The finished mural will be appreciated by our school and wider community.  The prize awarded to us of $750 in Resene Paint vouchers and drop sheets will turn our vision into a reality.”

RAWHITI SCHOOL

Mural Title: Rising Above

Entry Sketch

Completed Mural

This was a collaborative project undertaken by the Year 7 & 8 art group over Term 1.  Our school opened at the beginning of 2016 on our permanent site in North New Brighton, and while we have amazing new buildings and spaces, our grounds are still a work in progress.  Staff saw this as, not only a great learning experience but, an opportunity to get the senior students involved in creating a vibrant and inviting environment that the whole school can enjoy.  Our design includes elements that reflect our seaside location, the history of three schools merging to become one, our cultural links and our new Rāwhiti School identity. The art group are excited to be able to now see our design come to life, and are looking forward to using the Resene vouchers to purchase paint and get underway with painting.
