11 Apr 2026Situated 5km off the Kapiti Coast, Kapiti Island is an internationally famed predator-free nature reserve protecting some of New Zealand’s most endangered birds. Unfortunately, it’s not rubbish free.Access to the island is limited and by approved operators only. However, with amazing support from Richard and the Waste Minimization Team at Kapiti Coast Council, a group of 21 volunteers from council, Keep Kapiti Beautiful, Keep Hutt Valley Beautiful and Petone Beach Clean Up Crew with support from Department of Conservation were able to visit the northern end of the island and spend a day cleanup up along the Boulder Bank Coastline Loop Track. As shown in the photos, a staggering amount of rubbish was collected and manhandled back to the launch area making the area a little cleaner for our kiwi, kaka and takahe. Theres still plenty of coastline left for future visits.Co-operation and teamwork (coupled with stunning weather) achieved amazing results.Share this page
