Tamariki collaborate on award winning Porirua mural

Mana College students, in collaboration with Little Adventurers Early Childhood Centre, helped Paint Porirua Beautiful with their award winning mural after winning Keep New Zealand Beautiful’s annual Wall Worthy competition.

In its 7th year, the Wall Worthy competition celebrates our communities, local legends and unheard stories in a way that will visually improve the environment.  KNZB asked schools to submit what makes their town or school unique and illustrate how they would tell their story through a painted mural.

KNZB CEO, Heather Saunderson, says Wall Worthy is a nationwide behavioural change campaign aimed at the elimination and prevention of graffiti vandalism from a community based approach.  “There tends to be a reduction in tagging when urban murals, reflective of the local community, are used to replace graffiti vandalised walls” says Saunderson.

Lexey Prentice, project co-ordinator from Little Adventurers, said “It was very exciting to see the mural develop and be part of this journey with Mana College, and to have the opportunity to help with a small portion of the painting. We are so excited that the mural is now complete and have had amazing feedback from our whānau. Every day the tamariki look at this mural and are excited to share what they see.”

Their prize includes $750.00 of Resene paint and accessory vouchers, a drop cloth, t-shirts caps, high vis vests, badges and more to get their mural started.

Winners of the Wall Worthy 2017 competition were Coromandel Community Preschool, Sacred Heart School,  Newlands Intermediate School and Little Adventurers’ Early Learning Centre (artwork by students of Mana High School).
