Keep New Zealand Beautiful was originally founded as the Litter Council in 1969 to promote litter control in New Zealand. Litter reduction and waste minimisation are still a key part of our mandate today.

We run G.J. Gardner Home Clean Up Week nationwide every September. Teams of volunteers all over the country Do The Right Thing and hold litter clean up events in their communities.

Communities are able to request a free Clean Up Kit from us at any point during the year, if they wish to organise a clean up event outside of our official Clean Up Week.

To get involved in any of these initiatives, sign up for our newsletter or keep an eye on our News page for details as they’re announced throughout the year.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful is working to establish a National Litter Index like those successfully implemented in other parts of the world. This is a system that allows the amount of visible litter in a community to be measured and recorded, which in turn allows us to target hotspots and track progress.

If you’d like to find out how clean your area really is, you can participate by doing a litter count in your community.

Litter counts are quick and easy to do. We need counts from areas that are relatively clean as well as those with litter problems – contact us to find out how.
