Keep New Zealand Beautiful was originally founded as the Litter Council in 1969 to promote litter control in New Zealand. Litter reduction and waste minimisation are still a key part of our mandate today.

We run KNZB Clean-Up Week nationwide every September as part of Keep New Zealand Beautiful Month. Teams of volunteers all over the country hold litter clean-up events in their communities.

June is Be A Tidy Kiwi Month, when we run our Waste Warriors recycling and waste minimiation education campaign. National Volunteer Week, also in June, recognises the work of our incredible volunteers up and down the country.

To get involved in any of these intiatives, sign up for our newsletter or keep an eye on our Newsand Events pages for details as they’re announced throughout the year.

NEW ZEALAND LITTER INDEX

Keep New Zealand Beautiful is working to establish a National Litter Index like those successfully implemented in other parts of the world. This is a system that allows the amount of visible litter in a community to be measured and recorded, which in turn allows us to target hotspots and track progress.

If you’d like to find out how clean your area really is, you can participate by doing a litter count in your community.

DOING A LITTER COUNT

Litter counts are quick and easy to do. We need counts from areas that are relatively clean as well as those with litter problems – contact us to find out how.

REPORT ILLEGAL DUMPING

Illegal dumping is the depositing of household or commercial rubbish into or next to bins. If you know of an area that is a hotspot for illegal dumping or other persistent litter problems, call 0800 TIDY NZ.

CIGARETTE BUTT LITTER

Discarded cigarette butts are a significant environmental issue in New Zealand. We offer support to businesses wanting to help tackle the problem in their area, including free cigarette butt bins and smoker education campaign material. Read more
