Congratulations to Peter Turney, our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month for December

Congratulations to Peter Turney, our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month for December.

Peter has been picking up rubbish in Tawa for over a decade. Peter describes himself as a person who likes to keep everything neat and tidy. He would see litter around Tawa and thought the situation could be improved upon.

Peter says “I don’t actually remember the exact date I started. No one else was picking up rubbish so I thought I’d do it myself. It’s been one of those things that started out of nowhere and has developed as time as gone on.”

He often collects litter from Tawa’s main shopping area and many of the locals in Tawa know him and often stop to thank him for his hard work. Peter says picking up litter gives him a sense of purpose.

“You do have a tendency to think, I’ve cleaned up, I wonder how long it will stay like that?” says Peter. “Then before you know it, it’s back again.”

Peter was honoured earlier this year with a Tawa Community Civic Award for his contribution to keeping Tawa beautiful and also featured on TVNZ’s Good Sorts.

Congratulations again Peter! Thank you for your hard work to keep Tawa beautiful!
