Congratulations to our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month for March, Wei Zhang!

Congratulations to our Tidy Kiwi Volunteer of the Month, Wei Zhang.

Wei Zhang is a PHD student at the Department of Public Health, University of Otago, Wellington Campus. Wei has launched an initiative called  ‘Sustainability Starts from the Streets (3S)’ to tackle the litter problem in the streets surrounding her campus building. So far there are five members in the group and Wei hopes to get others involved.

“I have seen the streets in Wellington becoming much dirtier in recent years. I worry that the accumulated rubbish and cigarette butts will end up devastating our fragile environment and end up in the waterways,” says Wei.

So far the group have successfully completed three clean ups during their Thursday lunch breaks. Wanting to make their initiative as environmentally friendly as possible the group use paper boxes from the university to collect the rubbish in, reusable gloves and recycle what they can.

“It is very important to do the 3S initiative because it will not only help to reduce debris getting into water system, but also influence passers-by and educate the public to avoid littering irresponsibly in future.”

Congratulations again Wei and thanks for starting this fantastic initiative to keep your little part of New Zealand beautiful.
