31 Aug 2025 Lower Hutt student, Lucy Worthington, has been picking up rubbish since she started walking to kindy over 13 years ago. These neighbourhood pick ups quickly turned into participating at local pick up events and she is a now a regular at Keep Lower Hutt Beautiful’s weekend clean ups.Lucy’s favorite place to collect rubbish is near the seal colony on the Pencarrow cost. The rugged shoreline and conditions mean there are always plenty of large items to drag back to the waiting vehicle including giant bouys, ropes and fish crates. The bouys are donated to Wellington Zoo and are repurposed into “toys” for the big cats.In between clean ups Lucy can be found gathering rubbish on her walk to and from school – particularly around grates and drains to ensure items are not washed out to sea.If every person picked up rubbish instead of walking passed it then all our communities would be cleaner and healthier places to live! THANK YOU LUCY FOR KEEPING NEW ZEALAND BEAUTIFUL Share this page
