NATURE MURAL WINNERS

Recently Keep New Zealand Beautiful put a call out for submissions from local communities and artists to tell us how they would paint their local community beautiful.  The mandate of submissions was that they needed to devleop a mural idea that incorporated the natural environment surrounding it.

Congratulations to our two winners…check out their amazing entries below!

  1. Deow Owen – Southland “Mai Mai Girl”
  2. Wellington City Council – Wellington “Hold Tight”

WINNER – ‘Mai Mai Girl’

This design was created by Deow Owen and will be painted on to a wall in a rural setting in Southland.  This public mural represents the inter-twining of humans in to their natural environment.

WINNER – ‘Hold Tight’

The above submission was made by the Wellington City Council Programme Advisor – Kate Duke.  This design was created by Kelly Spencer and Stephen Templer to be painted within the existing ivy plants that are steadily creeping up a wall on Cuba Street in Wellington.

The artists wanted to create a piece of art that serves a purpose, and provides a message to the community.  In this instance the message is environmental.  People are becoming incredibly aware of the threats to our bee population, and the the potential repercussions on life itself if we lose our bees.

The message ‘hold tight’ speaks to the bees, asking them to please stick with us while we try to build a better future, whilst also alluding to the nature in which ivy grows – holding tight to the surface which it has chosen to crawl up.
