Tackling Cigarette Butts

Since changes to the Smokefree Environment Act banned indoor smoking, there has been a significant jump in cigarette butt litter in New Zealand. Over 60 million cigarette butts are discarded into our environment every year. These end up in our waterways and enter the food chains of fish, birds and other marine life.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful provides free purpose-designed cigarette butt bins to our member councils and businesses. We offer campaign support to help councils and business associations educate smokers, making them more conscious of their littering and highlighting alternatives.

The butt bins are branded with the KNZB logo, and the initiative offers good brand alignment and PR opportunities for participating members.

CIGARETTE BUTT CAMPAIGN FUNDING

Keep New Zealand Beautiful is reliant on any funding we can get to deal with serious environmental problems like cigarette butt disposal. For that reason we have made a considered decision to accept funding from British American Tobacco New Zealand to assist our anti-litter education programmes. We recognise British American Tobacco’s awareness of the environmental impact of its products and its contribution to mitigating that impact.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful’s acceptance of this funding in no way endorses or supports smoking or the tobacco industry. British American Tobacco receives no public endorsement, recognition or promotion from Keep New Zealand Beautiful as a result of funding this programme.
