Local Litter Audit Toolkit

Our Local Litter Audit Toolkit provides you with all the information you need to become a citizen scientist and complete your own litter survey.

In 2019 we carried out a National Litter Audit which compiled data through the physical inspection and visual counting of litter in a number of specific, fixed sites. The data from this audit provides baseline data on litter across New Zealand to help inform national and regional policy development. It also forms the basis for ongoing environmental reporting on litter.

The information that’s collected via local litter surveys enables us to create a secondary audit dataset. This will inform local government legislation as well as help us to identify litter hotspots so that we can target our programmes into the areas of our community most in need.
