Lake Whakamaru Clean-up Day - May 2010

Unfortunately there has been some recent bad press about the campervans that venture through the lovely countryside in the Lake Whakamaru area, leaving all kinds of rubbish behind.  Some Councils are closing park over certain hours, and even banning mobile homes from stopping overnight in many places. It's great to see some responsible 'self-contained motor homers' are taking a stand against the culprits and ensuring their Tidy Kiwi Status stays around for years to come!

A member of www.nzmotorhome.co.nz online forum suggested a clean up day to provide some positive energy into the issue and to demonstrate that there are 'motorhomers' out there that only want to enjoy the countryside and leave no trace of their being there.  So additional to the Whakamaru cleanup, around the country a whole group of forum members, some from Manukau, some in Nelson and of course some in Whakamaru - thirty five people in all got together in difficult places and cleaned up some rubbish from camping places and park over spots and even the roadside.

The pile of rubbish left near Whakamaru after the clean up

Fourteen people in six vehicles converged on Lake Whakamaru and collected thirteen bags of rubbish (and several items that were too large to fit in the bags) from the picnic areas, laybys, including some of SH 32 west of Lake Taupo and along some of SH 30 roadside.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful gives everyone who was involved with this a good old pat on the back, this is a sensational effort in keeping these areas beautiful, and making sure that they stay that way for the next users! Keep up the good work!
