20 Mar 2015 For the third year running, this Keep New Zealand Beautiful led initiative will see nearly $180,000 injected into community initiatives across the country, to educate and encourage people to recycle more, thanks to the Coca-Cola Foundation Grants Programme. 15 stand-out projects across the country have been awarded the funding, having been chosen for their innovative, unique and fun solutions to encouraging people to recycle, particularly while they’re out and about. Those projects include a professional theatre group, who will perform at primary schools throughout Dunedin to encourage school children to recycle, and a Kumeroa-based project that will entail building a greenhouse out of recycled bottles to promote an environmental curriculum. Keep New Zealand Beautiful and Coca-Cola Community Recycling Initiatives Grants awarded to: Flaxmere College – Place recycling bins in the Flaxmere school where students, teachers and the community can utilise them and educate all parties on the importance of recycling and minimising waste in the community. Hastings District Council – Increase recycling access for the Hawke’s Bay districts 17,000 rural residents by making recycling convenient. Keep Dunedin Beautiful- Theatre Group – Sending a professional theatre group into primary schools with messages about the need to recycle and dispose of waste responsibly. Kumeroa Hopelands School – Building a greenhouse out of recycled bottles to promote an environmental curriculum. Marlborough District Council – Following on from the 2014 project, establish six permanent and two exchange containers located in the Marlborough region for the collection of recyclables. Organic Wealth – Engage with up to 26,000 students in the Wellington region to participate in a Youtube recycling song competition. Project Litefoot Trust – Implement the waste minimisation component of the LiteClub initiative in 12 community sports clubs. Sustaining Hawke’s Bay Trust – Purchase equipment and prepare to launch a Zero Waste Events service for commercial and not for profit events in the Hawke’s Bay area.
